I always loved driving. Although I have only acquired my driving license a couple of years ago, I have made several road trips and had a student job which required a lot of driving. I just love driving around, with a specific destination in mind, music going through the speakers and the window a bit open. I have driven around Western- & Eastern-Europe and even drove on the left in the UK, but I certainly am not eager to drive in India. ever.
Firstly, in India people drive on the left-hand side, just like in the UK. Well, they should but actually they drive wherever they see a gap. So sometimes it happens that opposing cars have to drive in the bank because our driver is passing by a large truck so far on the right that he's actually driving on the opposing lane, making us fear for our lives at least a couple of times per hour.
Secondly, blowing horns is the unofficial national sport. Instead of using pinkers, people just blow their horn when they want to turn left, right or even just go straight on. When they pass by another vehicle, they blown their horn at least five times in order to alert the other driver that someone is passing by, at either side of the road.
Thirdly, highways are more or less the same as city centre roads. Everyone just drives as fast as they can. Also, pedestrtians, bikes, tuktuks, trucks, busses and cars all drive on the same highway, and not always in the same way, scaring the ... out of a tourist when he sees a car coming straight at him on a highway.
Yes, India has a lot to learn and teach to its drivers around the country.
No, I would not drive in this country in the near future.
Yes, if all the scooter drivers would have a car, India would probably be one big traffic jam.
No, the country's not doing anything at the moment in order to prevent this or improve the current situation.
Yes, India is Incredible.
No, I have not seen enough of this country yet!
Pictures coming when internet is better...
