When people come to visit me here, I usually do a 'small', about 2,5hr tour in the historical centre. This tour takes you partially to all the places named in the touristic guide and proposed by the Tourist Office of Rennes. It starts at the exit of the metro at Place Saint-Anne and passes by: Parque du Thabor, Rue de Paris, Rue des Viarmes, Quai Chateaubriand all the way to Charles De Gaulle -the modern area of the city-, back to Place de la République and passing by the Parliament, Opera and Hotel de Ville, before shortly passing by Place des Lices and ending up at a nice café in the Rue Saint Michel - Rue de la Soif.
I'm not saying that everyone has to do this tour, but I'm pretty sure that people coming to Rennes and doing this tour will have a good and nice sightseeing time here.
